Welcome and Opening Keynote Presentation
Storytelling as Fundraising Best Practice
Anne Melvin, Director of Training and Education, Harvard University

Numbers numb, jargon jars, and nobody ever marched on Washington because of a statistic,” or so says Andy Goodman, the non-project marketing guru. So then, why do so many of us talk about our mission in dry, accounting terms? We are hardwired to respond to stories, not statistics. Since giving comes from the heart, we need to learn to speak from the heart. Anne will kick off our conference with a session that explores the science of decision-making, and dissects the elements of a good story: the building blocks that allow you to construct a compelling, suspenseful story about your charity.
